Data Storage Device Scan Wizard
A Data Storage Device Scan detects partitions and logical drives that are not visible (accessible) to the operating system.
Use the Data Storage Device Scan to detect deleted and damaged partitions.
After a Data Storage Device Scan is complete, you can browse the detected partitions and recover data from them.
To start Data Storage Device Scan Wizard, select the disk to be scanned in the Recovery Explorer and do one of the following:
- From the Disk menu, click Scan
- Right-click the selected item and click Device Scan from the context menu.
When the Data Storage Device Scan Wizard starts for the first time, the first screen describes the process. Clear the Show this dialog next time? check box to avoid seeing this screen the next time you run this wizard.
To run the wizard, follow the steps below:
- Device Scan Options - the Data Storage Device Scan Wizard identifies the selected drive in this screen. You can select Use Default Scan Options, or set up your own configuration. A description of the custom scan options follows:
- Search for partitions - Specify which type or types of partitions (File System) are about to be scanned. Select the Any check box to detect all types of partitions.
- Confirm accepting detected partition - With this check box selected, each time the scan detects a new partition, a confirmation screen appears. Clear this check box to prevent the confirmation screen from appearing.
- Skip detected partition area - After a partition has been detected, you have the option to keep scanning the detected partition area or to skip to the next sector where the detected partition ends. When this check box is clear, ARAX Disk Doctor scans the detected partition for other lost or corrupted structures and takes more time to perform this task. Select this check box to skip to the next sector and reduce the time to perform this task.
- Scan every sector - Select this check box for the most complete scan of the device. ARAX Disk Doctor scans every device sector for partition signatures.
- Use Low Level Scan – There are two methods of scanning a device. Clear this check box to perform a detailed analysis of data storage structures. Select the check box to take much more time and perform a deeper analysis of the device sectors; the result of this scan recovers damaged areas as accurately as possible
- Ignore all bad sectors – Select this check box to ignore bad (unclear) sectors on the drive. Clear this check box to receive a message each time ARAX Disk Doctor finds a bad sector.
- After all options have been set, click Next.
- Device Scan Area - Define an area to inspect for detection of deleted or damaged partitions. You can select Scan entire disk if you are not sure of the location of the lost partition. Alternately, you can get a quicker results if you can choose a region on the disk to scan. To change the scanned region boundaries, click the Select scanning area radio button and define the regional boundaries by:
- Dragging the triangle markers to the start and end points of the region.
- Typing the start and end sectors in the appropriate fields.
If a partition has been deleted and no other partitions were created on top of it, you need to scan the Unallocated space. What this does is it narrows the scan region by specifying boundaries of this Unallocated region.
- Click Scan Device to start scanning the disk surface. A progress screen appears. You can click Stop! to stop the process at any time.
- If a partition is found, a message box appears. If the partition parameters look similar to the parameters of a partition that you know to be deleted or damaged, click Yes to accept the partition.
- After a scan is complete, a message screen appears. Click Finish to close the wizard and inspect all partitions or logical drives in the Recovery Explorer.
- If a partition is found, right-click it and click Restore Partition from the context menu).
- If files and folders are found, you can recover them from this deleted or damaged partition to the another safe location.
